The call came in around 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 1 when a resident observed a familiar person walk through their yard and into the woods, police said.

“They felt this was highly unusual, especially since it was 27 degrees out,” police said.

The snow was falling in sheets by this point in the storm, which left about 8 inches in East Longmeadow overnight.

Police began a search for the man by tracking his path in the snow down Bridge Lane. Other officers followed tracks discovered on Rivercliff Lane and then onto the Enfield High School football field, police said.

The tracks then seemed to turn around. Visibility was low as the snow came down quickly in thick flakes.

“Officers were able to see a faint silhouette walking in the football field,” police said.

When they made contact with the wanderer, the man said he had gotten lost in the snow and high winds.

“Luckily, despite the long walk, the gentleman was located in good health,” police said.

Enfield Emergency Medical responded to evaluate and, if necessary, treat the man.

“Quick action and teamwork led to a safe outcome,” police said.
